In our finest contrarian spirit, we present this REAL joker of a watch on the Western April Fool’s Day holiday. It is the latest creation of independent Russian watchmaker Konstantin Chaykin (also a member of the esteemed AHCI), aptly named Joker. Working from the tried and tested ETA 2824-2, Chaykin decided to imbue the mechanical watch as more of a kinematic piece of pop-art. There are no standard watch hands on the dial and the eyes and the smile of Joker, instead it is fitted with disk hours and minutes indicators as well as moon-phase display which looks like a tongue.
Konstantin Chaykin Joker
Limited edition 99 pieces
42mm x 13.7mm stainless steel case, automatic mechanical movement
The watch is highly emotional: its mood depends on both current time and Moon phase. The bezel riffs on a playing card theme: ‘Five of a Kind’ (the highest poker hand when playing with wild cards) is engraved on the bezel of the watch case. Note there is a second crown set at 9 o’clock position — it is fixed there to provide design symmetry, while also being fitted with a recessed corrector provided for correcting the moon-phase display. Not just a whimsical piece, however – the case finish and dial detail is ornate and impeccable, as one would expect from a AHCI-member such as Chaykin. It is fitted on a violet-dyed alligator strap with calfskin lining and green stitching.
Nicely done, Mr. Chaykin! Love it!
