NOMOS makes is Perpetuelle debut with a special model as part of their hand-wound “Ludwig” collection. This limited-edition NOMOS design appropriately bears the name “Oberlehrer” (“headmaster” in English). This is one neat watch, at a $1,540 price point…
Generally speaking, NOMOS watches have a modern and minimalistic design to them, and are done in very good taste (as can be seen here). The brand was formed in 1990, and its current manufacture with 110 or so people occupies a building just down the street from A. Lange and Glashütte Original. The brand’s watches incorporate elements typical of those coming out of the Glashütte, Germany region — three-quarter plate and blued screws, for example. NOMOS makes a range of its own calibers and prides itself on doing work in-house, noting that only certain specific pieces, such as the rubies used as jewel bearings or the Nivarox 1a balance springs that the manufactory must obtain from third parties. Much like the “Swiss Made” designation, the use “Glashütte” as a designation of origin for watches is protected; a rightful source of pride for NOMOS.
As for the NOMOS Ludwig Oberlehrer, one need only see the photos below to understand and appreciate (or not) the watch. I will just add that, at 1040 euros, this watch costs 100 euros less than NOMOS’ standard Ludwig model and is by many measures a great deal if the look suits you ($1,540 is the USD price) . On the plus side, there are just one hundred pieces that will be made; and the movement is manufactured by NOMOS in Glashütte, Germany (based on the ETA/Peseux 7001, as I understand). This watch is extremely flat (6.25mm) and has a noticeably fine bezel and long, slender lugs. On the other hand, the 35mm case is quite small compared to most watches seen today. You can buy these one of these watches at any Wempe store — in the U.S. the sole location is in New York.
