As I’ve covered since 2009, IWC is a dependable supporter of the Laureus Sport for Good program (Laureus Foundation) and each year the manufacture debuts a special new watch with an caseback engraving of a drawing done by a child (2009, 2011, 2012). Though this year’s IWC watch Laureus was a beautiful blue Portofino chronograph, IWC also recently participated in a fundraising charity night put on by Laureus Switzerland by contributing a one-of-a-kind perpetual calendar Pilot’s watch. The function raised more than 350,000 EUR, but the watch alone brought an impressive 116,000 EUR, or about $150,000.
This watch is basically an IWC Ref 3791 Spitfire Perpetual Calendar, except with the trademark “Laureus Blue” color — and it is cased in platinum! The open case back shows the rotor as an elegant Spitfire silhouette, as well as the engraving “Laureus Charity Night Zurich 2012” and the limited edition number “1/1”. Beautiful watch for a good case, well done IWC.
