IWC Portuguese Automatic “Dragon Year” Edition

It is the Chinese Year of the Dragon and not surprisingly every major luxury watch brand is trying to get in on the action. All it takes is a dragon or two somewhere — anywhere — on the watch and the watch is ready for limited edition status. Here’s IWC Schaffhausen’s entry into the “Year of the Dragon” category: the IWC Portuguese Automatic Edition Dragon Year with, yes, a dragon engraving on the rotor. Subtle, yes? Special? Mmmmm. An elegant looking watch, yes of course the Portuguese is, but this is barely anything more than just that. Then there is the matter of IWC’s pride in it’s limited editions these days: they are no longer individually numbered. These pieces? “One Out of 888″. If you want something more differentiated, my recommended alternative would be the the Blancpain Villeret Traditional Chinese Calendar Watch.

As you say… everyone is trying to get into the Chinese market. Manufacturing 888 watches is a somewhat of a cliché
The only positive thing I can say about ‘one of..’ is that it means there are no ‘special’ numbers. But surely here, there is an opportunity to knock out number 888 of 888 (whomsoever gets that one will have a sought after piece).
