SIHH 2013 preview…

Following up my earlier sneak peek at this watch and the Ingenieur Racing, we will now take a closer look at the the 2013 IWC Ingeneieur Automatic AMG Black Series Ceramic (Ref. 3225).

Mercedes AMG SLS Black Series Coupe

First let’s set the stage — “Black Series” is not a generic term, but rather a high-performance concept car line from Mercedes-AMG.  AMG of course being Mercedes models with more aggressive looks, a higher level of performance, better handling and stability, and more extensive use of carbon fiber than their regular Mercedes counterparts. Also, AMG models are typically the most expensive and highest-performance of each Mercedes class.   The AMG Black Series represents a further step of performance and styling upgrades to the vehicle — like the new AMG SLS Black Series pictured above.

Likewise this new black ceramic IWC Ingenieur is sportier, less traditional take on the Ingenieur.  As I mentioned in my last post, this watch reflects the new Ingenieur design codes first introduced in the Ref. 3765 Double Chronograph Titanium which debuted last year.

At 46mm (14.5mm thick), the ceramic case is on the larger end of the scale and I wonder if IWC fans might be hoping for something a couple mm’s smaller.  This said, the overall quality and look of the watch is quite superb and these watches will undoubtedly be a big hit for IWC.

The watch contains IWC’s in-house automatic mechanical 80110 calibre with black rotor treatment.

Love it. Any idea when it will be released? Any guesses on the price?

Yea, an amazing watch. Release will probably be mid-2013. No indications on price yet, but to make a wide guess I would say $10,000-$15,000.

It’s a good looking piece, but it’s too big by 2-3mm (as you mentioned). They had the size nailed down with the previous generation aquatimer and those too became too big. Realistically the movement doesn’t warrant that size of case, it should be around 43 to be a perfect daily wear time piece.

HI @8a86873657b542ba7ed919f8e77f7880:disqus Yea, I agree with you 100% on this. What’s the deal with the case size creep? Makes no sense here. Thanks for the comment! Kyle

Again IWC going too big! Normal people do not have the wrists for 46-47 mm watches.
I don’t want to look like a clown and I know that 44 is the maximum for me (and for 90 % of the people out there!)…
