Update: Sold for Singapore S$170,000 at the Kidz Horizon Appeal Ball held at the Ritz Carlton Singapore on 1 September 2012.
As you may know this year is the the 40th anniversary of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and Audemars Piguet has been travelling globably with a fine exhibit to showcase one of the most iconic watch (collection) in all of watch history. But what I have here is a bit more off the beaten path — a unique AP Royal Oak skeleton that will be auctioned for the Kidz Horizon Appeal charity, an Singapore-based organization which attends specifically to children who are suffering from chronic or terminal illness. The unique piece uses the skeletonised 2139 movement like the regular Royal Oak Skeleton but the case is 41mm (39mm regularly) and constructed of titanium with a cermet bezel, with pink gold hands and indices. You can read more about this watch and the benefactor over at Watches by SJX, a Singapore-based blog.
Also, if you are wondering, “cermet” is a material notably used in creating the space shuttle heat shield. A combo of the words “ceramics” and “metal”, this composite material combines the finest qualities of the two materials: extreme hardness of 1,450 Vickers as well as resistance to shocks, extreme temperatures and corrosion. One other AP using cermet that comes right now is the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Jarno Trulli Chrono.
