SIHH 2012 officially starts next week in Geneva, but yea you know the “sneak peeks” keep on coming right up to the last minute as the Swiss watch industry’s finest try keep the anticipation and excitement levels high. Here you can see the new Jaeger-LeCoultre Deep Sea Chronograph, a vintage looking dive watch which follows in the footsteps of last year’s Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox Tribute to Deep Sea. JLC tells me that this piece is inspired by the Memovox Deep Sea, and that “the hour-markers as well as the central hour and minute hands are covered by a Superluminova coating with a warm orange-tinted shade subtly reminiscent of the luminescent coating on the 1959 Memovox Deep Sea.” A fixed bezel surrounds a classic black dial face, protected by a Plexiglas watch glass. The water resistance is only 100 meters, so this watch is more about the vintage style than dive watch performance. Not exactly my cup of tea, but something that I suppose nostalgic JLC lovers might drool over. Stay tuned for more from JLC, next week!

Since its launch in 1931, the Jaeger-LeCoutlre Reverso has taken many forms, including different movements (over 50 in-house calibers) and hundreds of dials — in a variety of colors. A beautiful dark red lacquered dial adorns this new Reverso from Jaeger-LeCoultre, the Grande Reverso 1931 Rouge. The Grande Reverso 1931 Rouge reinterprets the red dials of the 1930s, a color which at the time was a definitive mark of individuality upon one’s wrist. This watch will be part of JLC’s new lineup at SIHH 2012 next January in Geneva.

Next month at SIHH 2012 in Geneva, Jaeger-LeCoultre will introduce a new Duomètre à Quantième Lunaire. Jaeger-LeCoultre’s goal in part with the “Duomètre” series is to develop complicated watches that keep time with great accuracy. While this new 40.5mm Duomètre à Quantième Lunaire may be viewed as a modest line extension rather than a completely new model (here is the 2011 Duomètre à Quantième Lunaire) , it would be shortsighted not to appreciate the merits of what really is a splendid watch — beautifully balanced design with an excellent movement. To me, this watch really represents a return to more traditional case sizing (the predecessor was 42mm vs. this piece at 40.5mm), itself a broader industry “trend” back to more modest sizes that started 1-2 years ago. This said, it looks like Jaeger-LeCoultre has likely elected to keep a lid on its most exciting pieces until January, so stay tuned in!

The truly extraordinary appearance of the watch lies in the actual concept behind the Dual-wing movement, which is distinguished by the presence of two independent energy sources: the first, regulated by the escapement and the balance, is entirely dedicated to the precise measurement of the passing of time; whereas the second source of energy is devoted to the display of the functions: hours, minutes, seconds, calendar and moon phases for both hemispheres. Their synchronisation is ensured by the jumping seconds hand mechanism. As an added horological bonus, this piece incorporates a jumping foudroyante seconds hand showing 1/6th of a second increments.

Earlier today Jaeger-LeCoultre announced the new, limited edition AMVOX 5 World Chronograph LMP1. This watch is meant to commemorate the seventh year of the partnership established between Jaeger-LeCoultre and Aston Martin Racing (maker of the LMP1 supercar). Counting this one, there have been 9 AMVOX models produced — I’ve written about a few of them here, here & here (more at JLC). The color motif and dial styling on this piece is absolutely killer — the dial colors are inspired by the Aston Martin LMP1 racing car. The case is great, too — ceramic/titanium. I’d guess the price to be somewhere around $20,000.

Jaeger-LeCoultre sets the story for this new watch, a modern day tribute to the original Memovox Deep Sea:

In 1959, Jaeger-LeCoultre introduced the first automatic diving watch equipped with an alarm: the Memovox Deep Sea. Three years earlier, in 1956, Captain Jacques Cousteau had unveiled the splendours of undersea life in his famous film “The Silent World”, which caused an unprecedented craze for the new diving techniques that he had developed using air cylinders. The Memovox Deep Sea, water-resistant to 10 bar and with its alarm notifying divers of when to begin their re-ascent, was astonishingly popular.

Still riding the wave of success enjoyed by its diving watch range, Jaeger-LeCoultre sought to pay tribute this year to their original bond with the watery depths, and so the new Memovox Tribute to Deep Sea revisits the Memovox Deep Sea—the first automatic diving watch equipped with an alarm. With identical characteristics to the original model (with the exception of the case diameter, artfully increased from 39 to 40.5 mm), this new timepiece is sure to entice collectors.

Two limited series of 959 and 359 pieces respectively will be exhibited at the “Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie”. The first version sports a black dial, while the second has a two-tone anthracite and black dial, originally developed for the US market and bearing the inscription “LeCoultre”, a historic allusion guaranteed to delight aficionados of the history of fine watchmaking.

Tribute to 1931

“An emblematic model that is inspired by the vintage piece that we have in the brand’s Heritage Gallery here in the Vallée de Joux.”, Jaeger-LeCoultre gives us a first look at this very sophisticated new “ultra thin” timepiece coming in 2011. The Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso watch was actually born in India in 1931 in response to English polo players’ desire for an unbreakable watch. It has of course evolved into one of the most iconic luxury watches ever! Jaeger-LeCoultre also tells me that “In 2011, the Reverso will appear in even more surprising and seductive guises, while remaining loyal to its legend that continues to push the borders of creativity.” Stay tuned in…

Jaeger-LeCoultre Grande Reverso Ultra Thin Tribute to 1931

There will be standard production models (Q2782520 and Q2788520) as well as a limited series in steel and in pink gold (Q2782521 and Q2788570), featuring a black or white dial with dagger-shaped hands and baton-type hour-markers directly inspired by the original Reverso. “The spirit of 1931 in contemporary dimensions, and all the Art Deco charm of the first Reversos interpreted in today’s language.”

Note that there is no Jaeger-LeCoultre brand name on the dial – just the Reverso, as with the vintage model that inspired this watch
