My only question – White Gold or Palladium?
I like when a high profile person is spotted wearing a nice luxury watch. But for me it is only fun and exciting when the person is captured in a candid photo and the watch is not 100% easy to identify. This allows all of me – and many other “crazy” watch owners, collectors & enthusiasts to employ some detective work, or simply have fun making in an educated guess as to the identity of the watch. For example, one of my all time favorite posts is this one of Bill Clinton in which I spotted him wearing a Panerai on return from his famous meeting with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il.
But did you know that the President of France, Nicolas Sarkozy, is also a big watch enthusiast? I did not. That is, until now. Courtesy of Girard-Perregaux’s Facebook page, here is a picture of Mr. Sarkozy “spotted” wearing a very, very nice watch:

The watch that the President of France is wearing? A Girard-Perregaux 1966 Annual Calendar and Equation of Time. In case you have any doubts, here is a close up:

And the definitive comparison:

What is not clear is the metal that the watch is made of. My first thought was white gold, as this is the only metal I was aware of aside from pink gold that the watch was produced with. Correct! It is white gold. Which is odd given that on Girard-Perregaux’s Facebook page the brand also suggests that the watch could be a palladium version. Palladium, for all practical purposes, would look almost identical to white gold, particularly in a photo such as this. Does GP make this watch in palladium? It does not.
