Harry - hi! thanks for popping in with a comment. I think your point that you enjoy reading about interesting watches from the lesser known/smaller brands makes perfect sense. To me, many of these Tier 2 brands/watches just aren't worth writing about, to be perfectly honest. But for something like a re-issue, etc. or if there is a particularly interesting story behind the watch - well, then I think such a watch may deserve an article. I'll do my best!
Cheers to you-
Kyle

The Rake

I was thinking about previous Ferrari watches - Girard-Perregaux had the license previously, right? My guess is those watches are worth 'nil! Perhaps Panerai will fare better, but I doubt it. On another topic, what does your nickname mean? If it is a secret, I understand. Just curious :-)

thank you for commenting from Munich! I visited Munich last year for Oktoberfest - of course it was one of my all time best vacations! As for this watch - well, yes - it is simply incredible! Seemingly so simple yet so complex, so orignal!

Also, cannot agree more with the moderator's introduction...thanks to Zenith's new CEO J.F. Dufour's back to basics approach, I really hope they win back all those that are still having signs of nausea caused by having laid eyes on the DefyExtrem-collection and the like...
Bravo for this newest addition, splendid movement, with foudroyante, nice balanced dial and subtle colorspectrum for the subdials. The red star on the edge of the seconds-hand is perhaps not necessary and for me the size is also a bit "dated to the 2010's", 39/40mm perhaps would have been more "timeless"? But nevertheless splendid piece!

...fingers crossed good things will happen indeed!

Someone needs to tell Eberhard to try understand how a Tachymeter scale workd. This stupid scale conversion to Miles makes them look like they don't know anything about watches.

The tachymeter scale is not tied to any unit in particular. You can use it to calculate average production rate, average speed and so on...

The same scale (in this case graded from 60 UNITS to 500 UNITS) thus applies to both Kilometers and Miles:
-If you measure how long it takes a car to cover 1 Km, you will read the result in Km.
-If you measure how long it takes to cover 1 Mile, you will use the EXACT SAME TABLE to read Miles.

Converting even tachymetric units to odd numbers is one of the stupidest things you could think of. No one is going to time a car over 1Km and want to read the result in Miles.

Beautiful and innovating. However, I wonder if, since it's a winding-movement, the digits will only be gradualy put in place inside that rectangle display. I think that would greatly diminish the 'cool' effect of the piece. Would like to see it in action and know how much will they sell for.

Oops, I wanted to say plain, NON-guilloche' dial...
Find that this dial has already a lot going on so no need for extra decoration...the sunray-polishing on the steel blued moonphase-disc is already quite decorative on its own.

How dramatic is the black (lacquered?) dial and silver indexes and classic Master-style numerals!
Is it me or should the date-window have been placed a bit more to the right to correspond with the position of the "9" on the other side?

Beautiful piece nevertheless!

Finally again, a nice, balanced non-testosterone filled dial.
Big bravo...an automatic (non-mecha-quartz) chronometer in the Master-series was long overdue.
Smart of a house like Jeager-LeCoultre to play into the renewed interest in chronometres with such a timeless classic, although 40mm makes it a bit too "hip" for me.

Smart of a house like Jeager-LeCoultre to play into the renewed interest in chronometres with such a timeless classic, although 40mm makes it a bit too “hip” for me.

Agree. What a beautiful movement the ElPrimero 410! Its a bit what the Boeing 747 is to the skies...design from the late 1960's and '70s so not the newest but still a "grand classique" of the chronometres. A Chronomaster T with plain silver guilloche'-dial, black alligator strap and plain buckle is one of my wrist best buddy's....aahhh, and that display back...lovely!!!

Oh yes, and definitely, the perlage on the half-hunter's back must have been done on a friday at 5.56pm I think! Bit of a shame for such a fine piece!
Don't get me wrong I love Blancpain, especially the pre-Swatchgroup pieces. Fantastic new movements 66R9 and 13R5 but the dialdesigners for the new L-evolution must have been having a few beers in the pub together with the colleagues of Zenith's Defy Xtrem I guess.
What is up with those testosterone-filled dials? Where has the subtlety and balance gone?

But let's not be too negative...big bravo to the movement-designers...8day powerreserve! And I am already so happy with my 4day powerreserve in the Cal 1106 and Cal 1150. But honestly, lately Blancpain is losing me a bit.

Actually, Tissot seems to be dipping into their historic DNA--much like stablemate Longines--with some of their recent offerings. They may be priced well below those timepieces that normally receive the most applause, but it's hard to argue that the upcoming Visodate 1957 and last year's Heritage Officer's Chrono aren't fantastic looking watches.

The new Seastar... Not so much to my eyes.

Miguel is right. I have the newest model of the "old" Memovox from the mid 1990's...the Master Memovox was a 36mm diameter with display back and gorgious views on how the gong is suspended on the saphire-caseback while the hammer is attached to the movement. This was calibre 914 (handwound).
Then they also had the "Reveil" which was an automatic alarm watch calibre 918, with date and a 39mm case.
The sound on mine is not a high melodic one like on the newer Reveil or Compressors but nor is it a buzzer (like on the older Memovoxes) It makes me think of a schoolbell, not too high, not too low.
An absolute beauty in classic "belle" horlogerie.
And although it was made in the late 1990's it has a timeless grand art-deco/1950's geometric simplicity to it! I can't wait to see how the new 40mm case is going to look....it is difficult to surpass a classic!

But surely it is comforting to see that a house like Jeager-LeCoultre is bringing out classic and understated pieces...which are a breath of fresh air after those monsters on the market (created during the Thierry Nataf at Zenith and many others) era...

Take a deep breath ... grand classics are back!

Hi Kyle - I certainly would not mind seeing more posts on offerings you find of interest from these and other "tier B" European brands. Names like Tissot, Oris, Certina and the like have a mixed bag of offerings, but then again we can say the same about many of the prestige brands also. Tissot is owned by Swatch Group so it can perhaps be considered a poor sibling of Blancpain and Omega.

Although on a general level a lot of their offerings can be ho-hum, I find it interesting to read about specific watches people find and like from these smaller names, since they are not nearly as widely covered as the big boys, and you can make some interesting and unique finds with some of these brands, both vintage and new.

Cheers from (getting warmer as spring previews it's arrival) Canada

Although I'm a fan of the case design and the Panerai quality, there is too much stigma attached to a watch with a non-watch corporate logo on the dial. I believe the values will drop further.

I personally never thought much of this partnership. I have always been much more interested in the Panerai brand on its own. There is the possibility of future value to be gained from a collector's/rarity standpoint I suppose but we are talking years down the road as I dont think this partnership was ever thriving. Just a hunch/guess though.

Rob,
thanks for sharing your experience. The after-sales service for the watch industry continues to be very lacking for some brands. Good luck with your situation. Unfortunately I have no specific advice to offer but perhaps other readers here will.

Absolutely terrible experience with a defective Chopard watch and the shop Bucherer, Zürich. I purchased a Chopard Monaco Historique in the summer of 2009 from Bucherer on Bahnhofstrasse. Within a few months the watch stopped winding at which time I noticed that a screw had come out of the mechanism and jammed the pendulum within the case (all nicely observed through the crystal back). Not something to expect with a watch in this category, and certainly not for a new piece. I immediately brought this to the attention of Bucherer and requested an identical watch as replacement, or the ability to exchange for a similar or more expensive model. Instead of providing me with either of these choices, both Bucherer and Chopard decided to treat this as a warranty repair issue. Extensive discussions both in person, over the phone, and by email had no effect on the extremely poor customer service and brand management by both Bucherer and Chopard and the watch is waiting to be picked up from the service department. I urge any readers of this posting to consider carefully their choice of shop (avoid Bucherer) , and choice of watch (Chopard) if you have any expectations of product quality and customer service at a level that luxury goods and jewelry would require. The fact that my wife and I have been customers of Bucherer for 20 years had no influence on their actions.

If any readers have suggestions on how I may resolve this stalemate, I would be happy to hear them at rob_61d@hotmail.com. If not, I hope that this posting has saved someone from being subject to the same experience.

As I predicted, TAG tried to embargo certain publishers and then went around them and released the new 1887 watch anyway: http://watch-happening.blogspot.com/2010/03/pre-basel-2010-tag-heuer-300-slr.html

What they do, is try to block any negative sites and then release the information to publishers that they are sure they can count on (aka roundmouths of the brand). It appears the owner of Watch Happening is a TAG Heuer roundmouth.

Ooh...there are so many, but if I had to choose from the modern brands; Moser, Lange, IWC, some of the quieter JLC's and Rolexes, lots of vintage...Minerva, Longines, Gubelin, Patek, Omega..and Rolex of course.

No disagreements with you on the subjectivity of taste! What brand / models of watches do you prefer?

Clearly taste is subjective; I'd say it was yet another ugly watch in a never ending flood of ugly watches.

LukasD
It will be interesting to see if/how they introduce this into the men's line. I think they are best to stick with ceramic bezels and leave the multi-materials bracelets to the lady's wathces.
Best

Always nice to hear your take. I think this watch will do well with TAG's target market. The quartz should significantly reduce the price point vs. a mechanical. These watches are all about the looks.

Can't TAG come up with products and marketing on their own?

Obviously not, they need Tiger, Dicaprio and many more celebs in order to sell their watches.

They need cars like Telsa to promote their products.

They have to sell cell phones because their watch business is not enough.

They charge for the USB drives that other watch companies give to the press for free.

They have to hire Seiko to make their movements.

Did I leave anything out?

TAG Heuer charges a premium for their products ($10,000 for non in-house movement watches), yet everyone jokes them and nobody who is truly passionate about watches would ever be caught dead with anything other than, maybe, a vintage TAG.

These are ok looking for ladies watches I guess, too bad they are made by TAG. The USB drive is the worst idea I have ever seen from a company of this size. Even the Lincoln Blackwood truck was a better idea than the $360 TAG USB drive. It is ironic, because so many of the watch brands give out drives like this for free, at the Baselworld show, pre-loaded with high-resolution images. Maybe TAG will start charging press $360 for their USB drive. Or maybe TAG will give the USB drives to press for free, since no one wants to buy one. Heck, it looks like they are giving the TAG phones away with the Telsa cars.

Looks fantastic to me....a great lady watch - good thing i'm single and don't have a lady that would probably want such a watch.

Great move form TAG - can't wait to see man's ceramic watches.
