Baselworld 2010: Breitling Avenger Seawolf Chrono Blacksteel
by Kyle on February 08, 2010

Editor’s note: updated now to reflect price, below

Water resistant to 3,300 feet (1,000 meters), the big and bold Breitling Avenger Seawolf Chrono Blacksteel is definitely a watch that will turn some heads.  The case is 45mm in diameter and very tough looking with a lot of depth to it as well.  The movement is Breitling’s Caliber 73, a Breitling “SuperQuartz” certified chronometer movement.  Also worth noting is that the watch utilizes a Breitling patented “magnetic pushpiece” system which enables the chronograph functions to be fully functional even at 3,300 feet deep (most chronographs can not be used at meaningful depths because it can compromise the watertight-ness of the watch.  As part of a total production run of 2,000 pieces, this watch can also be had on Breitling’s Ocean Racer strap and will be coming soon to a Breitling dealer near you)….and the price (per Breitling) will be $5,015 on the diver pro strap, $5,460 on the ocean racer.

This watch is not to be confused with the Breitling Super Avenger Avenger Skyland Blacksteel (thanks to our astute readers for the correction) which was announced in 2008.  While this watch was the first “Blacksteel” model from Breitling and it did capture a lot of attention for its bold look, the watch was only water resistant to 300 meters.  So this is a big step up for the hard-core dive watch fans (of which I am not one) who like the Breitling Blacksteel look.

    Cool! Prefer my steelfish though.

    Nice
did you find a price ?

    • Kyle says:

No official price yet. The other Avenger Seawolf chronos retail for around $4,300 (can be had for much less in grey market, though) and this will probably be similarly priced, but a bit more.

    • Kyle says:

Just got word from Breitling – I updated the blog post above to reflect the retail price of this watch (2 prices, depending on the strap)

Dive watches are my favorite “genre” of timepiece thus far into my 5 year collecting fetish. I dont dig the SuperQuartz idea though. I would prefer to own the original Blacksteel from a few years back.

  4. Andrew says:

The first Blacksteel watch was actually the Avenger Skyland Blacksteel. Then came the Super Avenger Blacksteel. I like the look but feel it is wasted on a quartz piece. This makes for an even more expensive quartz watch. I would have liked to see them come out with a Superocean Steelfish Blacksteel or Avenger Seawolf Blacksteel.

This post was mentioned on Twitter by perpetuelle: New Breitling Avenger Seawolf Chrono Blacksteel http://bit.ly/cnlr1b one serious looking watch!…

  6. The Rake says:

The pricing is ridiculous, even for a Breitling LE. Just my opinion.

    • Kyle says:

Yea – and I don’t exactly consider 2,000 (or 3,000 as was the last blacksteel) pieces to be limited edition. (notice that I didn’t even state “limited edition”in my post). For me, it’s got to be in the hundreds to get a LE mention, the lower the better. Switching topics a bit – I have also heard from ADs that Bretiling’s watches with its new B01 in-house movement intro’d last year are also priced way too high and as a result not selling as well as is otherwise would.

  7. Frank says:

A quartz watch for more than $5,000 ???
    NO WAY!

    • Kyle says:

No, Frank it is “SUPER Quartz” LOL! I can get a “Handmade in Germany” Glashutte or other nice watch for this price level!

  8. saraceni says:

For me, a superquarz or a quartz is not a first line watches. I have the first blacksteel with automatic movement (905/3000) and for me is better than the new one.
